Radical Atmospheres was co-created by: Andrew Demirjian, Nina Bowers, Emma Rose Brown, Samantha Carter, Mary Gruesser, Anisa Hodsic, Kassandra Luyando, Phillip Campbell, Andrey Patino, Susanna Randolph, and Leo Sano in Prof. Andrew Demirjian’s Spaces Speak class, a course in Hunter College’s Integrated Media Arts MFA. The students used archival materials to make their sound collage/sound poetry pieces, these included manifestos, activist newspapers, radio broadcasts, letters, interviews and articles. The students also used troves of recently released NYPD surveillance reports of these groups as well as COINTELPRO documents to craft their soundscapes. They would employ a variety of different e-literature computational methods for analyzing and organizing the textual materials being used. To bring the non-audio material to life, they would ask each other and other groups to speak the lines of text.
